A word from the photographer
On This Night: Bob Seger
Another American artist currently closing out his career is Bob Seger. He has sold over 75 million records during his 60 year career. With a long list of hit songs from “Night Moves” to “Old Time Rock and Roll”, Seger is one of the biggest selling artists of all time. On this night, 39 years ago, I was headed to the world famous Madison Square Garden in New York City. Seger was on his “Against The Wind” tour, an album that became his biggest selling album with the title track “Against The Wind” becoming a huge hit single, along with “You’ll Accompany Me”. That night the opening band was REO Speedwagon, so the show was going to be a showcase of American rock n’ roll.
The hits of Bob Seger
Bob Seger and his ensemble of eight fellow musicians and back up singers played hit after hit with little if any visible production or “stage show”, it was all about the music. Of course being a large arena show, the lighting was excellent, always a plus for any photographer. A common thing for me to look out for as I got settled into my shooting position was, how many follow spotlights were a part of the light show that night.
Good old Kodak Print Film
That night I shot my typical 2-3 rolls of 36 Exposure Kodak Print Film. My gear that night and throughout my career was my black body Minolta SRT-201, with film advancement by my “thumb”, NOT a motor drive unit that I used to see many pit photographers use. I always said that if I had one of them, I would forget I was a still photographer and turn into a motion picture cameraman in the moment. Using film, that would be costly.
3 x 5 Prints
At the end of a very enjoyable show, I felt very confident that I shot some amazing images and was anxious to see them printed out on 3×5 prints at the time of developing. Many photographers would only have proof sheets printed out off the negatives, but I preferred the larger format of a 3×5 print. I also cataloged ALL of my images in file drawers or storage bins for easy access. Certainly “old school” compared to the digital way of doing things now.
