A word from the photographer
ON THIS NIGHT : GRETCHEN PETERS
One of the most successful singer/songwriters to once call Boulder home, Gretchen relocated to Nashville in 1987 after seventeen years in Colorado. From her earliest years in the 70’s, she worked hard at her craft of songwriting, as well as performing or “busking” on the brand-new Pearl Street Mall in 1977. Her earliest influences included Gram Parsons, Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell fitting in comfortably with the Colorado music vibe of the times. Soon Gretchen was playing local venues the Olympic Dance Hall, Peggy’s Hi-Lo, Tulagi as well as the Stage Stop in Rollinsville and Pioneer Inn to the west above Boulder.
Sold-out Red Rocks
In 1977 Gretchen won first place in KBCO’s Boulder Music Songwriting Contest, judged by Kenny Weissberg. She played as a solo act, duet act and full band with former band members who include Mel Stonebraker formerly of Propinquity, “Cactus” Moser future member of Highway 101 and husband of Wynonna Judd, Michael Woody of the Too High Band, Dan McCorison and Randy Barker to name a few. I photographed Gretchen on her return to Colorado, signed to a major label, a CMA Song of The Year Award, a two-time Grammy Nominee and playing a sold-out Red Rocks for the first time, a full circle dream come true moment for sure.
Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame
Gretchen has recorded over 10 solo albums, has written hits for Martina McBride, Shania Twain, George Strait, Trisha Yearwood and Bonnie Raitt to name just a few. She continues a co-writing partnership with Bryan Adams, writing hits like When You Love Someone and recently, Here I Am from the Dreamworks Animated Movie “Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron”. She was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014 and performs to sold out venues all over England, Scotland and Ireland where she has found a niche fan base. She tours the US regularly as well as holding songwriting weekends and seminars.
