ON THIS NIGHT : 38 SPECIAL
I photographed 38 Special in both 1980 and 1981, first on their “Rockin’ into the Night” tour, then the next year on their “Wild-Eyed Southern Boys” tour. As a fan of the southern rock genre, I was happy to capture images of the band early in their career here, their latest hit single “Hang on Loosely” would soon see them going in a more commercial direction musically. The early eighties saw the beginning of the end of the once very popular southern rock sound.

Southern Rock
Founded in the early seventies by vocalist Donnie Van Zant, younger brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Ronnie Van Zant, and guitarist Don Barnes, you can see here the uncanny resemblance of Donnie to Ronnie on stage. Also seen in these images, longtime 38 Special bassist Larry Junstrom, who was also a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Don Barnes would eventually lead the band into a more commercial radio rock direction, and in fact would sing vocals on their biggest hits.
