Gov’t Mule concert pictures ~ Bill O’Leary

A word from the photographer

I literally photographed Gov’t Mule at their inception in late 1993 at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado. Both guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Michael Woody had just finished a tour with The Allman Brothers Band. This was to be a side project for them, a power trio with Matt Abts on drums who was also from the Dickey Betts band. As a long-time southern rock fan, I had heard a few years earlier that Warren Haynes was the current torchbearer of the long since gone genre.

Glory days of southern rock

As I was shooting the show, I felt as if I was going back to the glory days of southern rock, albeit with one single guitarist where typically there were at least two or three. Warren Haynes certainly handled the guitar playing duties on his own and I immediately became convinced of his talent. I first heard Warren Haynes on an Allman Brothers Band album called Shades of Two Worlds, particularly a song called “End of The Line”, where his slide solo was out of this world, a benchmark southern rock guitar solo.
