ON THIS NIGHT : LEFTOVER SALMON
Another very successful Colorado band, Leftover Salmon founded in 1989 when vocalist/guitarist Vince Herman of the Salmon Heads and multi-instrumentalist Drew Emmitt from the Left Hand String Band came together for a New Years Eve show in Crested Butte Colorado. Since then, Leftover Salmon has had great success releasing 10 albums and touring nationally and playing the largest festivals, including Telluride Bluegrass. These images were taken at the Fox Theatre in 1992 just prior to the release of their first album, Bridges to Bert.
The early years
Joining Vince Herman and Drew Emmitt early on were Mark Vann on banjo, who nine years later tragically passed away from a battle with cancer, and legendary Boulder drummer Michael Wooten, formerly with the band Navarro and later joining Carole King’s band. Also, of note keyboard player Bill McKay who started with local Boulder band Band Du Jour and later played with the Derek Trucks Band was a member of Leftover Salmon after these images, for eleven years.
Mary Rippon Theater
The other images seen here are from 1993, the band had hired me to shoot a performance on the campus of the University of Colorado at the historic Mary Rippon Theater, an outdoor amphitheater regularly used for Shakespeare theatrical events. The band continue with mainstays Vince Herman and Drew Emmitt, evolving their Americana, bluegrass and zydeco sounds to new progressive heights. Paving the way for current bands The String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain String Band and Railroad Earth.
