Johnny Van Zant concert pictures ~ Bill O’Leary

A word from the photographer

ON THIS NIGHT : THE JOHNNY VAN ZANT BAND

In 1980, southern rock was coming close to the end of its wave of popularity. However, bands like Molly Hatchet, 38 Special and Blackfoot were having great success. Along comes the youngest of the three Van Zant brothers, Johnny with his debut album No More Dirty Deals. I photographed his new band November 8, 1980 at the Capitol Theater in New Jersey. The band rocked thru new songs “No More Dirty Deals” and the epic “Standing in The Darkness”.

Lynyrd Skynyrd

The Johnny Van Zant would end it’s run in 1985 after releasing four albums. In 1987 he became the lead vocalist of Lynyrd Skynyrd who had reunited after a ten-year hiatus following the bands tragic plane crash in 1977. Following in his older brother’s footsteps, literally, he has remained Lynyrd Skynyrd’s vocalist and spiritual leader ever since, making these very early images of him truly special to any southern rock fan.
