About Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd headlined the show on The Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour. Lynyrd Skynyrd is a southern rock band that was originally formed by Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Bob Burns, Allen Collins and Larry Junstrom under the name My Backyard in 1964. They had several name changes in five years before finally deciding on  Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1969. Lynyrd Skynyrd was very active and stayed busy touring as much as possible until their plane crashed on October 20, 1977. Unfortunately, Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines, and three others died in the crash. The surviving band members had some extensive injuries from the crash. They all decided to disband and concentrate on healing both emotionally and physically from the plane crash.

Lynyrd Skynyrd reformed

Then, in 1987 Lynyrd Skynyrd reformed with Ronnie’s younger brother Johnny Van Zant as lead vocalist and have continued touring since then. They announced their farewell tour in January. Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March of  2006.

.The  current Band

The current line up is Johnny Van Zant (lead vocals), Gary Rossington (guitar/ founding member), Rickey Medlocke (guitar), Keith Christopher (bass), Mark Matejka (guitar), Michael Cartellone (drummer), Peter Keys (keyboards/piano), and Carol Chase and Dale Krantz Rossington on backing vocals.
,

The performance and songs

They put on a phenomenal performance. The energy up on stage was fantastic! They included many of their hits in the set including “Saturday Night Special”, “What’s Your Name?”, “Tuesday’s Gone”, “Don’t Ask Me No Questions”, “Simple Man”, “Gimme Three Steps”, and “Sweet Home Alabama.”
.

The Encore

Then in the Encore, they closed with an extremely touching version of “Freebird” which began with “Johnny Van Zant” on vocals but then transitioned into seeing a recording of “Ronnie Van Zant” performing “Freebird” up on the large screen. The screen presentation then finished up with a  memorial to Ronnie, Steve, Cassie and the others in the band who have passed away over the years.
.

Still Rocking

The light presentation during Freebird was also just amazing!  It was obvious that they were all up there doing more than just performing, they were all up on stage having a fantastic time rocking out for the evening!
