The Teskey Brothers bring their Motown soul to the famous Spiegel Tent at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

In the beginning

Since the release of their ‘Half Mile Harvest’ album, just over a year ago, THE TESKEY BROTHERS have hit the ground running, literally. Hailing from Warrandyte, Victoria, just out of Melbourne, brothers Josh & Sam Teskey, originally formed the Teskey Brothers in 2008. They grew up listening to their parents R&B record collection, and developed a healthy appetite and appreciation for American Soul music. Now a 6-piece band, they are scoring gigs and festivals constantly, not only in Australia but also in New Zealand and the US.

Autumn in Adelaide

My hometown, Adelaide is in the throws of ‘Mad March’, with the Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Clipsal 500 and WOMADelaide all happening at virtually the same time. The city comes alive in the balmy Autumn weather, and attracts visitors from all over the world. On 7th March I had the privilege of photographing THE TESKEY BROTHERS in the famous Spiegel Tent in The Garden Of Unearthly Delights. Adelaide’s East Park Lands is transformed each February/March into an entertainment wonderland called the Garden Of Unearthly Delights. You can enter the Garden for free, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the good food & bars. Pop-up tented venues host a myriad of entertainment including comedy, dance and music. These shows run for 1 hour each and are ticketed. The Spiegel Tent is the most stunning of these pop-up tents. It is decorated in the Art Nouveau style with mirrors, stained glass and some intimate booths, and was originally built in Belgium around 100 years ago.

The Band

Playing to a packed audience, I watched The Teskeys charm their audience and win them completely over in a matter of a few songs. They played their most popular songs from ‘Half Mile Harvest’ including their opener ‘Crying Shame’, ‘Pain and Misery’, ‘Honey Moon’ and ‘Louisa’, which was written by drummer, Liam Gough. They also played a couple of new songs, which is always refreshing. Josh’s gritty soul voice wins hearts every time I see them perform.

En core

A forty-five minute set was definitely not enough for the adoring crowd and I thought the whole tent might collapse as they pounded the wooden floor demanding ‘more’. The band came back with ‘Hard To Handle’ an Otis Redding cover, paying homage to one of their beloved influences.

Whats Next ?

From here The Teskey Brothers are heading straight to The Port Fairy Folk Festival in Victoria, playing four separate set times. Then they are flying to the US to play 6 shows at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, before racing back to Australia to play at the famous Byron Bay Bluesfest at Easter. Did I mention they have just returned from a short tour in New Zealand? If you love Blues and Soul music, you will love this band. Make sure you check them out. I’m sure the future is going to be much bigger for these guys.
